New York City Orthopedic Spine Surgeon

If you suffer from herniated discs, we understand the pain and discomfort that comes along with it. Our New York City orthopedic spine surgeon, Dr. Andrew Casden, is here to help you through the process of diagnosing and treating your herniated disc problems. There are two kinds of herniated discs. The first is known as a lumbar herniated disc, which is the result of the nucleus of the intervertebral disc pushing out through a tear in the outer shell. This puts a great amount of pressure on the spinal nerve root located in your lower back. If this occurs, you will probably notice sharp pain traveling down your leg, which is called sciatica.

If you are experiencing this type of pain in your legs, or numbness in the legs, you should come and see our NYC orthopedic spine surgeon. At that point he will see if your medical history and symptoms suggest that you’ve slipped a disc, and will perform an MRI to confirm the diagnosis. Our Manhattan orthopedic spine surgeon offers a variety of different treatment options for lumbar herniated discs. In many cases, surgery is not needed to relieve the symptoms. Physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications, and rest often are effective for lessening the pain involved in herniated discs. If symptoms persist after trying those treatment options, surgery may be necessary. Our NYC orthopedic spine surgeon may suggest a microdisectomy, in which the surgeon can remove pieces of the disc that is putting pressure on the nerve and causing you discomfort. This procedure is not very invasive at all, and often can relieve painful symptoms the same day that it is performed.

The second type of herniated disc is a cervical herniated disc. This is a herniated disc in the neck that puts pressure on the spinal cord or cervical nerve roots. Symptoms of this kind of herniated disc include pain traveling up and down the arm, balance issues, difficulty walking, and weakness in the arms or legs. If you experience these symptoms, our New York City orthopedic spine surgeon will proceed as described above, similarly to the lumbar herniated disc process. If you feel that you may have slipped a disc, whether lumbar or cervical, do not hesitate to schedule an appointment with our Manhattan orthopedic spine surgeon today.
